The Story Behind the Emblem

The staggered blue/violet/red semicircle logo was first used on BMW Motorsport's 1973 racing cars — the year after BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded. It appeared on the CSL Batmobile racers, the 2002 Turbo racing derivatives, and every BMW Motorsport competition vehicle through the 1970s and 1980s before being replaced by the familiar M tristripe. For the 50th anniversary of BMW M GmbH in 2022, BMW reintroduced the original emblem as a factory-correct retrofit unit — machined and finished to OEM standards, with the correct pin spacing and adhesive backing for the F87 M2's bonnet mounting points.
